Noriyuki SAWA began his professional career in Europe in 1992 after being selected by the Cultural Ministry of the Japanese Government. He has been based in Prague since 1993 and frequently travels around the world. As both performer and director/scenographer, he has worked in more than 25 countries, appearing regularly at international festivals across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

His work draws inspiration from classical literature, including Shakespeare and Chekhov, for which he has created his own nonverbal interpretations such as Macbeth, King Lear, and The Cherry Orchard. Other productions are based on traditional Japanese legends, including the stories of Princess Kaguya, Ninja, and the fisherman Urashima. His performances—some for adults, some for children—are entirely nonverbal, using puppets, masks, movement, and music to tell powerful visual stories.

Noriyuki has taught courses and led workshops at numerous universities, schools, and festivals, including the Theatre Faculty of AMU (Prague), Stanford University, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University (USA), the London Puppetry School, and many others. His workshops are designed for a wide range of participants, from young children to emerging artists, established professionals, and seniors.

In recent years, he has continued to work as a director and designer for a wide variety of productions. He directed the large-scale puppet performance MOCCO for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020–2021. He also completed the three-year project KUN (a legendary sea creature from Taiwanese mythology) in Tainan City, Taiwan (2023–2025).

He is a member of UNIMA (International Puppetry Union) and the recipient of the Franz Kafka Medal (1999).
